Abraham Lincoln by Balddog4 Abraham Lincoln by Balddog4
This is the best prestident in the 19th centry because he kept the Nation together. If Abe Lincoln didn't do anything the United States of America wouldn't even be called the United States of America. We would be like Europe, a buch of contries just living in little space. But it's thanks to this great man that We, (Untied States,) are together. He belived in a Untied Nation, and he risk going to war just to keep that dream alive. We need to do that now. We need to be untied or Our emimes would just destroy us.

1.Depending on witch part of this country you live on, you'd ether be part of the U.S.A, or the c.s.a, not Europe, (Europe is a continent, not a country, there is no country with Europe in the name) The Civil War is called that because it was a civil war (a country fighting it's self). We weren't invaded by anyone.

2.You forget about the whole freed the slaves thing (I know it wasn't the only thing, but it was what most of the war was about), ya he did that too

I see we both love Abe, he's ranked right up there in my book :)

Thanks for your comments. I had family on both sides of the Civil War, but I love Lincoln because he kept the country from falling apart. Also with Lincoln freeing it helped lead to the things that we have now.

... not to be rude because i absolutaly love this man he is amazing but the country would have just split into the united states of america and the confederate states of america [USA] and [CSA]

the south didnt want ot take land from us they just wanted to keep their tradition of slavery alive so the ceceded we actualy forced them back although i am very happy we did slavery is wrong and awful

Yeah, but the main reason why Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the nation together because, it was to show the world that the United States can and will thrive. Because at the time other countries looked to America as something that wouldn't last a centry. And they were almost right. But we proved them wrong. And that's why America is so great, because we lasted for over 2 centries.

Wel of course. If you look through history you can see that every war that America fought in, happened because we were attacked. And God said that this is a favored land above all others, and that He will protect it as long as the people remember Him. Since at the time of the wars people were very religious and so God protected this land. The same thing will happen with the attack of 9/11. America will prevail over our enemies.

Yes. I like Abraham Lincoln.

Looking at some of the comments here, I see a lot of people bashing him, which I can understand. But some of you are attacking him for doing something good (like keeping out slavery) for a less-than-100%-ideal-reason.

While his reasoning for some of these things wasn't all that ideal, he did still do good, nonetheless.

Abraham Lincoln is probably one of the best presidents in American history. Saying just the 19th century doesn't do him justice. He had the guts to stand up to the confederacy and hold the nation together.

so you like of dislike slavery?

if not i see understand your ideals but you have to understand today we have things that really should be decided by states and i can agree states rights would be useful [abortion and death sentence and such]

still if the south did become the CSA america would have much less power and would be attacked by other countries because alot of them probably want to

I dislike slavery. However to suggest that Abe Lincoln conducted the war just to liberate Black People is a fallacy. He only got into war to maintain the union. Slavery was one of the center issues, to be sure, but there was more lost during the Civil War than just that. Not to mention there was an already growing movement of abolitionism in the south. And as a matter of fact, one of the south's most revered Generals, General Lee, was an ardent abolitionist himself. To him it was truly a battle between state's rights of secession from he government.

And, arguably, after the civil wars a lot of blacks were treated the same, sometimes even worse, for decades to come.

"
still if the south did become the CSA america would have much less power and would be attacked by other countries because alot of them probably want to" Baseless assumption here.

Keep in mind, in the last 200 years, what has history taught us? It has taught us that it take super states to commit levels of human atrocities unheard of ever before. It is when the state has full and absolute authority and power that it will and does behave horribly.

Nazi Germany, Soviet Union, Middle East dictatorships. Virtually ever country that has the federal power be so huge have committed barbarous atrocities to it's citizens and other innocent people.

When Lincoln was killed, his vp became president (Andrew Johnson), who was a flat out racist even for his, hated black people, blamed them for the war, & saw the south as a victim (even the slave owners).
So ya, in the Sence of laws & government they were screwed.

Having had ancestors that served on both sides of the American Civil War, my Grandfathers Family hailed from Massachusetts and my Grandmothers from Texas. I do observe Confederate Flag Day and name battlefields using the name the victor called the site, my classes love that. I understand the reasons that caused the South to secede from the Union. Lincoln's goal was to preserve the Union using any means he could, and as all men are, he was not perfect. It was a desperate time for our country. He stated that if he could preserve the Union by freeing all the slaves, he would. If he could do so by freeing some, he would. I he could do so by freeing none, then he would. Slavery would have died out with the coming of mechanization.
Lincoln grieved for every life lost in that war and explained that he told jokes because if he didn't he'd weep.
The post war reconstruction and nation would have been very different if he'd not been assassinated.
God bless President Lincoln.

I too had family on both side of the war. Infact I'm related to Eli Whitney the inventor of the Cotton Gin. Unfortunately, Eli Whitney is also known for "starting" the Civil War. Infact people even blame him for inventing the cotton gin in the first place. But what people don't understand is that Eli Whitney isn't to be blame for the Civil War, neither is Abe Lincoln is to blame. People need to stop living in the past and get into the present. Thanks for your comments:D
